Up At Noon

Nightlife and Other Nonsense

In the last few years, dozens of small, artist-run spaces in New York have been squeezed out by short-term leases and opportunistic developers.
It's a problem.
Is it any surprise that artists and the sometimes makeshift spaces where they perform are undervalued? The best shows are often in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night.
It's hard to see the value of people making culture if you never see people making culture.
Up at Noon is a series of daylight performances outside the Hunts Point subway station in the Bronx. We invite artists who started at and still play loft spaces, catering halls, and tiny living rooms all over this city.
If we're going to talk about complex subjects like gentrification and how to support developing artists, we need to first acknowledge those developing artists, then remember they face systemic challenges — challenges as big as capitalism itself.
Up at Noon reminds artists to seek new audiences and new allies. We celebrate artists because we want New York to celebrate artists.
